Japanese medical equipment maker Terumo will reinforce research and development of its catheters and other related products by constructing a new facility in Shizuoka Prefecture for new product and technology development. An open innovation center will be made within its headquarters to incorporate external ideas and technologies. Terumo is actively enhancing its competitiveness as competition has increased in the medical sector with Cannon and Fuji Film Holdings breaking into the market.

Terumo will invest 1 billion yen in its Ashitaka Factory, located in Fujinomiya City, Shizuoka Prefecture, to open its Ashitaka Innovation Center, slated to start operations this summer. The new center will be built in the vacant lot after the medical pump development and production site relocates. The entire plant will undergo renovation and the R&D division will be expanded to 3,400 square meters, 1.2 times its current footprint. The new facility layout streamlines the development process; co-locating the production plant and the development center facilitates design and creation of prototypes.

An open innovation center will be made in a corner of its headquarters. The scale is yet to be announced, but it is designed to bring together Terumo staffers with doctors, researchers, and engineers, utilizing the latest technologies such as artificial intelligence and robotics to develop new products.

Terumo plans to increase its global research and development headcount by 40% from its current 1,200, by March of 2022.
