Suga comments on U.S. trade deficit with Japan

Nikkei took up press remarks this morning by Chief Cabinet Secretary Suga, who commented on USG data regarding the trade deficit that America logged with Japan last year. He said: “Japanese companies have invested heavily in the U.S. Foreign direct investment in the U.S. by Japanese firms amounted to over $411 billion, and produced some 840,000 jobs. U.S.-Japan economic relations have matured…. We will make efforts to obtain the Trump administration’s understanding” for Japan’s contributions to the U.S. economy. As for the upcoming summit between Prime Minister Abe and President Trump, the government spokesman said: “It is extremely important for the two to hold constructive discussions on how they can cooperate on the economic front to build a ‘win-win’  relationship.”
