Ginowan Mayor Atsushi Sakima announced his administrative policies for fiscal 2017 at a regular city council meeting on Feb. 24. He also expressed his intention to visit the U.S. to meet the new administration of President Donald Trump and demand the early closure and return of the U.S. Marine Corps Futenma Air Station. If realized, it will be his second visit to Japan’s closest ally.
Sakima said, “I want to directly explain [to the U.S. government] the harsh reality of our city and citizens’ strong desire for the return [of the base.] I will firmly demand the early closure and return of the base so as not to let the Futenma base issue fall into oblivion.”
