Tokyo Electric Power Holdings has decided to decommission the No. 1 reactor at Fukushima Daini Nuclear Power Plant in Fukushima Prefecture. The Fukushima Daiichi nuclear accident caused by the Great East Japan Earthquake in March 2011 caused tremendous suffering for the local municipalities and their residents, who have been demanding that all four reactors at Fukushima Daini nuclear plant be decommissioned as well as the ones at Fukushima Daiichi. The government and the ruling parties had also urged TEPCO to clarify its policy regarding the Fukushima Daini reactors, which up until now had remained unclear. The company will decommission the No. 1 reactor, which suffered the most damage from the earthquake, and will continue to study the possibility of decommissioning the remaining three Daini reactors.
