Deputy Prime Minister and Finance Minister Taro Aso stated at a party of his faction — the Aso faction — in Tokyo held on the evening of April 12: “While the administration of (former Prime Minister) Shigeru Yoshida lasted for only seven years, the Abe administration will last for nine years,” indicating his support for Prime Minister Shinzo Abe to run for a third term as Liberal Democratic Party (LDP) president.

The LDP officially decided at its annual convention in March to extend the maximum tenure of the party president from “two consecutive terms for a total of six years” to “three terms for a total of nine years.” This will allow Abe to run for a third term when his current term ends in September 2018.
