NHK reported this afternoon U.S. Meat Export Federation President Seng held a press conference in Tokyo today and called on the U.S. and Japan to swiftly conclude an FTA and reduce Japan’s tariffs on U.S. beef. The network said that Seng, who visits Japan every year around this time for promotion purposes, pointed out that the 38.5% tariff on U.S. beef is high compared with other major markets in the world, and that the U.S. is being put at a disadvantage as the Japanese tariff on Australian beef was reduced after the effectuation of the Japan-Australia EPA. Seng was quoted as saying: “We want to be assured that with the TPP not being on the agenda of this administration, there will be a bilateral deal worked out as soon as possible with Japan.”
