Japanese children continue to take their own lives. Although the number of suicides for Japan overall is decreasing, that of elementary, junior high, and senior high school students is not.

According to the National Police Agency statistics, some 320 elementary, junior high, and senior high school students died from suicide in 2016. The breakdown is as follows: 12 elementary school students, 93 junior high school students, and 215 senior high school students. Two-thirds of the children who committed suicide were boys.
