All TV networks and most national papers gave top coverage to Reconstruction Minister Imamura’s decision to step down to take responsibility for a gaffe he made during a speech last night. In the speech, he said it was “rather fortunate” that the 3/11 disaster hit the Tohoku region rather than the Tokyo metropolitan area as the level of damage would have been much worse if it had occurred there. Given that Prime Minister Abe apologized for the remark at the same venue immediately afterward, the dailies said Imamura was effectively dismissed by the premier. Masayoshi Yoshino, an LDP Lower House member from Fukushima, will be appointed today as Imamura’s successor.
