Japan’s nuclear watchdog gives green light to uranium enrichment facility

The Nuclear Regulation Authority (NRA) on May 17 finalized an assessment report that says Japan Nuclear Fuel’s uranium enrichment facility in the village of Rokkasho, Aomori Prefecture, satisfies new regulatory requirements. It became the second fuel plant to clear new regulatory requirements. The plant went on line in 1992.

The Aomori plant is the only facility in Japan that can increase the concentration of the type of uranium that is prone to atomic fission. This type of uranium is used for nuclear fuel after its concentration is increased by centrifuging.  (Slightly abridged)
