The Okinawa municipal government announced on May 23 that it had removed drums containing dioxin-tainted residue from the soccer pitch that was formerly part of the Kadena Air Base. The municipal government also said it had completed surveys for contamination of soil and groundwater in the pitch. According to the municipal government, the soccer pitch will be turned into a parking lot to make up for the lack of parking space at the adjacent Koza Sports Park and be used for a multi-purpose arena that can accommodate up to 10,000 people.
