Japanese Foreign Minister Fumio Kishida held a teleconference with his French counterpart Jean-Yves Le Drian on May 23. They agreed to intensify pressure on North Korea through the UN Security Council and other means, as North Korea continues to advance its nuclear-weapon and ballistic-missile programs. They also shared the understanding that the Group of Seven nations should send a clear message to the reclusive state during their summit meeting to be held in Italy on May 26 and 27 (Taormina Summit). It was the two foreign ministers’ first teleconference since the installation of French President Emmanuel Macron.
