On May 31, LDP Lower House member Masaru Wakasa (Tokyo No. 10 constituency) met with Secretary General Toshihiro Nikai at LDP Headquarters and submitted his notice of resignation from the party. Nikai has placed the handling of the resignation on hold. On May 29, Wakasa submitted a “preliminary resignation” to party executives and indicated his intent to support “Tomin First no Kai,” a regional political party led by Tokyo Governor Yuriko Koike, in the Tokyo Metropolitan Assembly election, which will be held on July 2. Speaking to reporters on May 31, Hakubun Shimomura, executive acting secretary-general of the LDP and chairman of the Federation of Tokyo Metropolitan Liberal Democratic Party Branches, criticized Wakasa: “He has poor judgment as a politician. He should have submitted his resignation from the start.”
