NHK’s “Close-up Gendai +” reported that despite the  popularity of Japanese animation around the world, the industry has become a “sweatshop” for animators and production staff because they are underpaid. The program said that although for many young Japanese animator is their “dream job,” they end up quitting the industry due to low wages and long working hours. There is concern that Japanese animation will have a bleak future if nothing is done to improve the situation. The program introduced an animation production company that began utilizing state-of-the-art technology and tools instead of relying on drawing by hand in order to save time and improve its workers’ quality of life.
