The Ryukyu Shimpo and Okinawa Times published photos illegally taken by anti-military base activists inside off-limits U.S. military facilities. In response, the Defense Ministry’s Okinawa Defense Bureau sent a letter on July 20 to the press club covering the Okinawa Prefectural Government, in which both papers are members. The letter asked media outlets not to file news reports based on illegally obtained information.

The letter pertained to photos and reports carried by the two newspapers on July 14 and July 19.

On July 14, page 1 of Ryukyu Shimpo and page 28 of the Okinawa Times published photos with comments of Porites lutea coral in waters near the K9 seawall the Defense Bureau is building north of Henokosaki in Camp Schwab. These photos were taken by Diving Team Rainbow, a group opposed to Henoko relocation.

According to the Defense Bureau, the photos were taken in an off-limits area, which was in violation of the Special Criminal Law implementing the Japan-U.S. Status of Forces Agreement (SOFA).

In response to queries from Sankei Shimbun, Ryukyu Shimpo said, “No comment,” while Okinawa Times had not responded as of the evening of July 20.
