PROFILE: LDP’s acting Diet affairs chief Okonogi is new national safety head

Hachiro Okonogi, the acting chairman of the ruling Liberal Democratic Party’s Diet affairs committee, assumed his first Cabinet post as minister of state for disaster management.

 

Okonogi, a seven-term House of Representatives lawmaker representing a constituency in Kanagawa Prefecture, served as chairman of the lower house committee on security.

 

The 52-year-old also assumed the post of chairman of the National Public Safety Commission. Okonogi has previously served as the LDP’s chief deputy secretary general and vice minister at the Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry.
