Japanese Foreign Minister Taro Kono met with Philippine President Rodrigo Duterte in Manila on Aug. 8 and promised that Japan will support Duterte’s push for infrastructure development and the fight against drugs and terrorism. Japan’s top diplomat also revealed that Japan will provide a yen-denominated loan of roughly 16 billion yen in order to assist the Southeast Asian nation’s measures against flooding. Kono and Duterte agreed to closely cooperate to resolve such issues as the North Korean nuclear crisis and tensions in the South China Sea. Kono told Duterte, “As foreign minister, I’d like to make efforts to further strengthen the bilateral relationship,” and asked him to visit Japan at an early date.
