Major trading house Sojitz Corporation has initiated a verification test on the use of artificial intelligence (AI) in the farming of tuna, with an eye to increasing the efficiency of raising tuna. Harnessing technology developed by NTT Docomo, the test will analyze the changes that occur in the fish due to weather and water temperature and adjust the amount of food given to the fish.

The testing facility is a farm operated by Sojitz Tuna Farm Takashima Co., Ltd., a wholly owned Sojitz subsidiary, in Matsuura City, Nagasaki Prefecture. The water quality and amount of food eaten by the fish are centrally managed by technology developed by NTT Docomo. Using AI, the optimal food volume is calculated using the data collected. The test is scheduled to be conducted for a period of four to six months. According to Sojitz, tuna are sensitive to changes in their environment, and the amount they eat varies with the weather and water temperature. If the fish are given too much food, they die from the deterioration in water quality.
