Abe confirms close cooperation with UN on nuclear non-proliferation

On Aug. 10, Prime Minister Shinzo Abe met with Izumi Nakamatsu, high representative for disarmament affairs at the United Nations, at the Prime Minister’s Office [Kantei] and confirmed that Japan will work closely with the UN on disarmament and nuclear non-proliferation initiatives. Abe reiterated that Japan will call on nuclear and non-nuclear states to realize a world free of nuclear weapons and lead the international community on this issue. He congratulated her on her appointment as under-secretary general of disarmament affairs, saying that “the appointment is good news from the perspective of women’s empowerment.”
