Nemoto to serve as “director general” of LDP constitutional revision headquarters

The Liberal Democratic Party (LDP) Headquarters for the Promotion of Revision to the Constitution is making personnel changes in light of the recent reshuffle of the cabinet and the LDP leadership. It has decided to create the new job of “director general” (jimusocho) above the existing secretary general, and former Reconstruction Minister Takumi Nemoto (deputy chair of the headquarters), who is close to Prime Minister Shinzo Abe, will serve in this position.

The headquarters’ previous secretary general, Yoko Kamikawa, who was responsible for the actual drafting of constitutional revision proposals, has moved on to become the justice minister. Her position will be taken up by headquarters deputy chair Naoki Okada.

The original plan was to present the draft proposal for the amendment of Article 9 at a plenary meeting on Aug. 29. This has been postponed due to the personnel changes and schedule conflicts with the factions’ study meetings. Senior officials of the headquarters are aiming at holding the meeting in early September.
