Starting from fiscal 2018, the Ministry of Education, Culture, Sports, Science and Technology (MEXT) will extend financial support to universities active in recruiting junior researchers and female scholars. It will help partially finance subsides that the schools provide those scholars to finance the cost of child daycare and to launch new research projects. It plans to select about 10 schools after soliciting proposals from universities nationwide from spring next year and allocate about 100 million to each of them.
MEXT found there are limits to what universities can do alone to help young researchers remain motivated and help prevent scholars who are raising children from suspending their careers. Most scholars raising children are in their 30s. It will earmark the necessary funds in budgetary requests for fiscal 2018. (Abridged)
