On Aug. 29, the Cabinet Office presented to the Liberal Democratic Party its plan to request 319 billion yen for Okinawa development and promotion in the FY 2018 budget. The proposed budget request is 4 billion yen more than the 315 billion yen in the initial FY 2017 budget. It reduced the lump-sum subsidies that can largely be used at Okinawa Prefecture’s discretion by 10.5 billion yen from the initial FY 2017 budget to 125.3 billion yen. But it increased public works expenditures by 9.4 billion yen to 152.3 billion yen. The Cabinet Office newly included 350 million yen to set up a grant-in-aid scholarship system for Okinawa.
