FY2018 budget requests for policy spending total a record 77 trillion yen

On Sept. 6, the Ministry of Finance announced the total figure for budget requests submitted by central government ministries and agencies for the FY2018 budget. General account budget requests topped 100 trillion yen for the fourth straight year, coming to 100.9586 trillion yen, up 3.5039 trillion yen from the FY2017 initial budget. The figure is below requests for fiscal 2017 (101.4707 trillion yen) thanks to a decrease in government bond interest payment expenses with the decrease in interest rates. Requests for policy spending totaled a record 77.1372 trillion yen, excluding expenditures for servicing government bonds. (Abridged)
