Chief Representative Natsuo Yamaguchi of the junior coalition partner Komeito is to leave for Moscow on Sept. 12 to meet with Federation Council Speaker Valentina Matviyenko and other parliamentarians. The Federation Council is the upper house of the Federation Assembly of Russia. Yamaguchi will stay in the country until Sept. 17. While in Russia, Yamaguchi intends to meet with senior government officials.

At the recent summit meeting held on Sept. 7, Prime Minister Shinzo Abe and Russian President Vladimir Putin agreed to narrow down the joint economic activities on the Northern Territories to five fields. Through parliamentarian diplomacy, Yamaguchi will indirectly help Abe promote Japan-Russia relations.

Matviyenko, Putin’s close aide, ranks third in the Russian government after the president and prime minister. She has been Federation Council Speaker since 2011.
