The European Union plans to partially lift the restrictions imposed on Japanese food imports from Fukushima and neighboring prefectures since the 2011 nuclear accident.
The EU requires radiation tests and safety certificates for food from these areas.
Experts at the European Commission voted on Monday to lift the restrictions on some items.
They are expected to include rice from Fukushima Prefecture, as well as seafood and mushrooms from 10 prefectures. The decision is likely to be made official before the end of the year.
Earlier this month, the EU Parliament adopted a resolution to review the restrictions, citing safety concerns.
But the commission concluded that the safety of the food has been scientifically verified.
54 countries and regions introduced import restrictions on Japanese food imports after the 2011 Fukushima crisis. But the figure has gradually declined, and 31 were maintaining them in April.
