Democratic Party (DP) leader Seiji Maehara gave an interview to the Yomiuri Shimbun at the party’s headquarters on Oct. 4. Since the DP has decided to merge with the Party of Hope, some Upper House members, local legislators, and former Lower House members from the DP are now seeking to run as independents. But Maehara said, “I just need to combine them into a large group (after the Lower House election),” expressing his expectations for the merger with the Party of Hope. As for the reason why he decided to merge with the new party, Maehara said, “I’ve been skeptical of (the DP’s) extreme leftward shift for the past two years.” He was referring to the party’s electoral tie-up with the Japanese Communist Party (JCP) promoted under the leadership of Katsuya Okada and Renho.
