Ryukyu Shimpo reported on Ginowan Mayor Sakima’s meetings with DOS Office of Japanese Affairs Director Chung and other USG officials on Monday in Washington. The mayor reportedly made requests to the USG officials for the Futenma base to be returned to Japan as soon as possible. The paper wrote that the USG officials said in response that it is necessary to move forward with the existing plan to relocate the base to Henoko to reduce the base-hosting burden on Okinawa and remove the danger at Futenma. However, the officials did not comment on when the base will be returned. Okinawa Times ran a similar Kyodo story, quoting Chung as telling the mayor that the USG is hoping that the base will be returned as soon as possible while noting that the Henoko plan is the best option for removing the danger at Henoko.
