The Liberal Democratic Party decided on Oct. 30 to appoint the party’s Diet Affairs Committee Chairman Hiroshi Moriyama as head of the party’s headquarters to lead negotiations on the Trans-Pacific Partnership free trade pact and Japan’s economic partnership agreement with the European Union. Koya Nishikawa, who had served as chairman of the headquarters for the TPP and Japan-EU EPA lost his seat in the latest general election. Though concern had mounted over the absence of a coordinator, the party has tapped Moriyama, who has served as farm minister just like Nishikawa, to deal with the situation.

Meanwhile, arraignments are being made to appoint Election Strategy Committee Chairman Ryu Shionoya as head of the party’s Research Commission on Agriculture, Forestry and Fisheries Strategy and Food Industry to succeed Nishikawa.
