Tokyo, Nov. 2 (Jiji Press)–Former Democratic Party leader Seiji Maehara submitted his resignation to the Japanese opposition party on Thursday, aiming to join Tokyo Governor Yuriko Koike’s Party of Hope.
Kohei Otsuka, current DP president, plans to accept Maehara’s exit.
After his resignation is approved, Maehara will swiftly submit a letter to join the new conservative party formed just before the House of Representatives election last month.
Maehara tried to have all DP members seeking reelection to the lower chamber of the Diet run in the race on the new party’s ticket. But the move created confusion among those members because Koike rejected some of them.
Following the Party of Hope’s setback in the election, Maehara stepped down as DP president to take the blame for failing to get many DP members back to the Lower House
