Full translation of PM Abe’s remarks on Nov. 5 on President Trump’s visit

Q: Mr. Trump has arrived in Japan. What are your expectations for his visit?

Prime Minister Shinzo Abe: I wholeheartedly welcome President Trump’s historic visit to Japan. I hope to further solidify the bonds of the Japan-U.S. alliance based on my friendship with him and on our relationship of trust. I intend to spend time discussing the North Korea situation and various other international issues with him.

Q: Were you able to deepen your relationship with Mr. Trump through golf?

Abe: The weather was just perfect, and we were welcomed warmly (at the Kasumigaseki Country Club). I think President Trump enjoyed the game very much. I also truly had a wonderful time.

We talked about golf during the game, and there are various issues that one can discuss candidly in the relaxed atmosphere of the golf course, so we also talked about difficult issues. I think we were able to have a leisurely, in-depth discussion. Thank you.

Q: How was your dinner with President Trump?

Abe: It was a very nice evening.

Q: Was he pleased with it?

Abe: I think he enjoyed it very much.
