Meeting between Foreign Minister Taro Kono and Secretary of State Rex Tillerson


Kono and Tillerson exchanged information on the North Korea situation. They agreed that now is the time to apply pressure. They also agreed that pressure is gradually having an impact.


They discussed strategy for a free and open Indo-Pacific and issues relating to the U.S. Forces Japan (USFJ). They also touched on China.


Meeting between Kono and USTR Robert Lighthizer


Kono and Lighthizer confirmed the results of the second Japan-U.S. Economic Dialogue held in Washington on Oct. 16 and spearheaded by Deputy Prime Minister and Finance Minister Taro Aso and Vice President Mike Pence. They discussed Japanese and U.S. leadership in economic growth in the Asia-Pacific and the world.


Kono: Japanese investments in the U.S. have been the most effective in creating jobs compared to other countries.


Kono and Lighthizer agreed that Japanese investments in the U.S. will continue to have a significant impact and that there are various options for an economic order between the two countries, including a bilateral free trade agreement (FTA). These options will be discussed starting from the third Japan-U.S. Economic Dialogue.
