North Korea
Prime Minister Shinzo Abe: The international community as a whole should apply maximum pressure on North Korea.
Prime Minister Abe, President Xi Jinping agreed that the denuclearization of the Korean Peninsula is the common goal of Japan and China, and that the two countries will cooperate closely for the full implementation of UN Security Council resolutions.
Japan-China relations
Abe: With the leadership in Japan and China being strengthened, we would like to promote the improvement of bilateral relations vigorously. I would like to visit China at an appropriate time next year, and I hope that President Xi will visit Japan as soon as possible.
Xi: We attach great importance to high-level exchanges. Today’s meeting marks a new start in the Japan-China relationship.
Economic relations
Abe, Xi agreed that it is significant for the development of third countries for Japan and China to do business in these countries, and that the two countries will continue their discussions on how they can contribute to stability and prosperity in the region and in the world through such means as the Belt and Road Initiative.
East China Sea
Abe, Xi agreed to accelerate consultations on starting the operation of a maritime and air liaison mechanism (to prevent accidental conflicts in the East China Sea) at an early date.
Abe: True improvement in bilateral relations will not be possible without stability in the East China Sea.
