Gist of Abe’s policy speech to Diet

The following is the gist of Prime Minister Shinzo Abe’s policy speech in a special Diet session on Friday, his first after being re-elected as leader following his party’s victory in the general election.

Abe calls for debate among ruling and opposition parties over a first-ever amendment to Japan’s pacifist Constitution.

Abe also pledges to:

— promote “aggressive” diplomacy, including raising pressure on North Korea.

— boost Japan’s defense capabilities, including missile defense.

— hold a trilateral summit with Chinese and South Korean leaders “as soon as possible.”

— resolve the dual challenges of Japan’s aging population and falling birthrate.

— offer free preschool education by fiscal 2020.
