Over 25,000 sexual assault cases reported at U.S. military facilities in 4 years: DoD report

The U.S. Defense Department’s Sexual Assault Prevention and Response Office released on Nov. 17 a report on cases of sexual violence committed at U.S. military facilities from U.S. fiscal 2013 (October 2012-September 2013) to fiscal 2016. There were over 25,000 cases over this four-year period: 8,294 reported by the Army, 4,788 by the Navy, 3,400 by the Marines, and 8,876 by the Air Force.

 

In terms of the number of incidents for each military base, Kadena Air Base tops the list among U.S. bases in Okinawa, with 110 cases reported (28 in FY13, 26 in FY14, 19 in FY15, and 37 in FY16). This is followed by the Marines’ Camp Schwab with 96 cases (31 in FY13, 21 in FY14, 24 in FY15, and 20 in FY16).

 

Camp Courtney, with 76 cases reported, ranks third (22 in FY13, 19 in FY14, 18 in FY15, and 17 in FY16). Camp Butler reported 60 cases (13 in FY13, 10 in FY14, 22 in FY15, and 15 in FY16), while Futenma Air Station reported 53 incidents (23 in FY13, 14 in FY14, 11 in FY15, and 5 in FY16).
