NHK reported at noon that Fukui Governor Nishikawa announced at a press conference this morning that he will agree to the resumption of Reactors No. 3 and 4 at the prefecture’s Oi nuclear power plant, saying that KEPCO is planning to resume the operation of Reactor No. 3 in mid-January and Reactor No. 4 in mid-March. According to the network, Governor Nishikawa explained that he made the decision after the prefecture’s panel of experts confirmed the safety of the nuclear station from an engineering perspective and KEPCO disclosed a plan to find a candidate site for an intermediate storage facility for spent fuel by the end of next year. The network quoted Chief Cabinet Secretary Suga as telling reporters this morning: “It was extremely important for us to obtain the understanding of Governor Nishikawa…We continue to expect KEPCO to ensure safety as a top priority given that the legal procedures of the Nuclear Regulation Authority are still ongoing.”
