The government and the ruling parties are planning to convene the regular Diet session for next year in mid-January. Coordination is underway for the session to start on Jan. 19, but this may also be delayed to Jan. 22 depending on Prime Minister Shinzo Abe’s diplomatic schedule. The above was revealed by a senior ruling party official on Nov. 24.

The government and the ruling parties envision passing a FY17 supplementary budget for measures to eliminate waiting lists at childcare facilities at an early date, to be followed by the enactment of the FY18 budget in March.

Bills relating to work-style reform aimed at reducing long work hours, amendments to the Health Promotion Law to deal with passive smoking, and other legislation will also be deliberated.
