Okinawa assembly passes resolution to protest fatal car accident involving Marine

The Okinawa Prefectural Assembly unanimously passed a resolution of protest and a formal statement of opinion on Nov. 28 in the wake of the arrest of a U.S. Marine stationed in Okinawa on the charge of drunk driving that resulted in death. The resolution and the statement, both addressed to U.S. Ambassador to Japan William Hagerty and Prime Minister Shinzo Abe, call for the U.S. Marine’s relocation outside the prefecture or Japan and for prompt compensation to the victim’s family, saying the U.S. military’s enforcement of official discipline and measures to prevent the recurrence of crimes and accidents are not functioning.
