A meeting to call for the passage of the “bill on the promotion of gender equality in the political sector,” aimed at increasing the number of female lawmakers, was held at the Second House of Representatives Members’ Office Building in Nagatacho, Tokyo, on Nov. 28.

Masaharu Nakagawa, chair of the supra-partisan parliamentary union that has been deliberating the bill, indicated that the bill will be submitted to the next regular Diet session in early 2018 for passage in that session.

The bill calls for all political parties to field equal numbers of male and female candidates in elections. While the ruling and opposition parties had reached an agreement to merge their proposed bills last year, the bill had not been deliberated and was scrapped due to the dissolution of the Lower House in September.
