Experts discuss North Korea

Six experts discussed North Korea’s recent ICBM launch and related issues. The discussants were Canon Institute for Global Studies Research Director Kunihiko Miyake, Nanzan University Professor Shunji Hiraiwa, former MSDF fleet commander Yoji Koda, Ryukoku University Professor Ri Sotetsu, Kanagawa University Professor Ryo Sahashi, and University of Tokyo Professor Kasahiro Kohashi. The panelists agreed that there has been steady improvement in North Korea’s missile technologies and that Pyongyang exploited the difference between the U.S. and China in their approaches to dealing with North Korea. Li said the latest missile test was a threat intended to urge Washington to begin dialogue with Pyongyang. However, Sahashi speculated that the Trump administration is not yet prepared for dialogue. Kohara said China is becoming increasingly concerned about moves of both the U.S. and the DPRK because any development would have a major impact on its national interests.
