Defense Minister Itsunori Onodera said that the new type of intercontinental ballistic missile (ICBM) North Korea launched on Nov. 29 “could have a range of more than 10,000 km depending on the weight of its warhead, factoring in the flight altitude, distance, and released images.” He made the remarks at a meeting of the Committee on Foreign Affairs and Defense at the Upper House held on Dec. 5.

It was the first time that the Ministry of Defense (MOD) analyzed that a missile has a range of more than 10,000 km since the reclusive nation fired a “modified Taepodong-2” projectile in December 2012 and February 2016. Experts analyze that the recently-launched ICBM may have a range of more than 13,000 km.
