Waste disposal company to make decision on garbage collection on U.S. bases today

In light of the Okinawa Prefectural Government’s revocation of the industrial waste disposal license of Kurashiki Kankyo, an industrial waste disposal company located in Ikehara, Okinawa City (company president: Yuji Minami), Okinawa City also revoked the company’s license for general waste disposal on Dec. 5, resulting in the suspension of most of its operations.

However, since domestic laws do not apply on the U.S. military bases, garbage collection on the bases is possible without the permission of the prefectural and city governments. It is possible that this company may continue to collect and transport garbage on the bases.

Kurashiki Kankyo normally collects household garbage on the bases and transports it to the Kadena Ammunition Storage Area in Yomitan Village for temporary storage. Minami said he will “make a decision on the morning of Dec. 6.” (Abridged)
