It was learned on Dec. 9 that the Japanese and Russian governments are considering outdoor sightseeing tours taking advantage of the pristine nature in the Northern Territories as part of bilateral joint economic activities. This is expected to be discussed at the bureau chief level working group meeting to be held in Moscow in mid-December.
Many parts of the Northern Islands are untouched by civilization. The proposed outdoor tours will include mountaineering, fishing, and viewing sunset over the Shiretoko Peninsula from the Kunashiri Island.
In addition to tourism, the bureau chief level working group will discuss specific projects in four areas: aquaculture, greenhouse horticulture, wind power generation, and waste reduction. (Abridged)
