Asahi wrote that the Ministry of Defense told an LDP meeting on Tuesday that the Aegis Ashore system will likely cost just under 100 billion yen per unit compared with the previous estimate of 80 billion yen. The ministry will allocate a total of about 200 billion yen to implement its plan to introduce two of the missile defense systems. Mainichi front-paged a similar report adding that the cost of the Aegis Ashore may increase because the GOJ may have to purchase the system from the United States at its asking price under the Foreign Military Sales system. The paper also wrote that the GOJ’s spending for ballistic missile defense since fiscal 2004 will likely reach 2 trillion yen in fiscal 2018.
