The Ministry of Agriculture, Forestry and Fisheries (MAFF) will request 468 billion yen in the supplementary budget for fiscal 2017. It will earmark 317 billion yen to implement measures related to trade deals, including Japan’s economic partnership agreement with the European Union. To ease the impact that an expected increase of cheese imports will have on domestic producers, 15 billion yen will be allocated. To bolster the competitiveness of Japan’s wood products, 40 billion yen will be earmarked. To step up efforts to monitor and crack down on foreign fishing ships against their illegal operations, it will allocate 4 billion yen to newly build two ships.
