A meeting of the relevant cabinet ministers was held on Dec. 18 to discuss the reinforcement of the Japan Coast Guard (JCG) ahead of the finalization of the draft FY18 budget. The meeting affirmed the procurement of patrol boats carrying helicopters on board and new jet planes for maritime surveillance. This was in light of the Chinese government ships’ frequent intrusions into Japanese territorial waters near the Senkaku Islands and illegal fishing by North Korean fishing boats in the Sea of Japan.

Minister of Land, Infrastructure, Transport and Tourism Keiichi Ishii stated after the meeting: “We would like to reinforce the JCG to make sure that it is capable of dealing both with policing the territorial waters near the Senkakus and North Korean fishing boats and wooden vessels drifting to Japan.”
