Liberal Democratic Party (LDP) Secretary General Toshihiro Nikai met with former Chinese Vice Premier Zeng Peiyan on Dec. 27. Nikai said during the meeting: “We would like to build a Japan-China relationship that would be the envy of other countries in the world in 2018.” He also stated: “Competition and cooperation between the major power China and Japan, which is trying to catch up, is heading toward a positive direction.”

According to the Japanese side, Zeng responded with: “The development of the Japan-China relationship is also important for regional and global development.”

Nikai visited Tsinghua University earlier in the day, where he became the first Japanese politician to receive an honorary degree from the university.
