S. Korean navy begins 2-day exercise for defense of disputed islets

SEOUL — South Korea’s navy on Thursday began a two-day exercise for the defense of a pair of disputed islands in the Sea of Japan, a South Korean Defense Ministry source said.

The move drew a swift diplomatic protest from Japan, which claims the islets, called Dokdo in South Korea and Takeshima in Japan.

The Japanese government lodged a protest, saying the islets are an “inherent part of Japanese territory” and the exercise is “unacceptable,” according to a senior Japanese Foreign Ministry official.
