LDP’s Nikai: Gov’t should react calmly to ROK president’s criticism of comfort women deal

By Jun Kudo in Beijing

Liberal Democratic Party (LDP) Secretary General Toshihiro Nikai, who is on a visit to China, commented on Dec. 29 on ROK President Moon Jae-in’s statement that the Japan-ROK agreement on the comfort women issue was “seriously flawed.” He said: “It will be impossible to do anything if (Japan) reacts strongly to everything,” calling on the Japanese government to respond calmly. This was in reply to a question in Beijing from reporters accompanying him on his trip.

Nikai also stated: “It will be difficult to get along with neighboring countries if (Japan) does not have the high-mindedness to understand other party’s positions.”

The Japan-ROK agreement concluded in late 2015 confirmed that the comfort women issue was “finally and irreversibly” resolved. The Japanese government is critical of the Moon administration’s approach and refuses to renegotiate the agreement.
