Sunday’s Okinawa Times led with a report written by freelance journalist Jon Mitchell, who said that according to a copy of USMC court-martial documents he has obtained, an Okinawa-based Marine sergeant was given a 20-year prison sentence in March 2017 for child sexual abuse and molestation. The original sentence of 40 years was reportedly reduced by almost half as a result of a plea bargain. The article said that from January through November 2017, a total of 16 Okinawa-based Marines were found guilty of sex-related crimes in court-martial trials, with the victims being children in many of the cases.
