Toyota Tsusho will launch a new effort to stabilize electricity supply and demand by transmitting electricity stored in electric vehicles (EVs) to the power grid. The Japanese trading house says that the wide use of the system will make it possible to adjust the power supply and demand balance without building new power plants, with EVs playing the role of batteries. The company affiliated with Japanese auto giant Toyota Motor aims to expand the system in Japan promptly as it has already been put into practice in some parts of Europe, where more and more EVs are hitting the roads.

Toyota Tsusho invested an undisclosed amount in Nuvve Corporation, a U.S. startup that has developed a new technology called “vehicle-to-grid (V2G)” in December 2017. (Abridged)
