Fewer U.S. nuclear-powered subs called at Japanese ports

Port calls by U.S. nuclear submarines

Sixteen nuclear-powered U.S. subs made 46 port calls in Japan for a total of 119 days in 2017, Akahata learned from municipalities where those submarines made port calls.

U.S. Navy White Beach in Okinawa Prefecture (Uruma City) had the most port calls (16, down by 4 compared with 2016), U.S. Navy Yokosuka Base in Kanagawa Prefecture (16, down by 1), Sasebo Base in Nagasaki Prefecture (14, down by 10).

The total number of port calls for 2017 decreased by 16 from the 62 recorded during 2016.

Although the number remains high, the reasons for the significant decrease is that the U.S. military is strengthening its cooperation with the Korean military in response to North Korea’s repeated ballistic missile launches and nuclear tests.

In October and December when joint exercises were conducted between the U.S. and South Korea, two new Virginia-class attack submarines (114 meters long) called at the Yokosuka base: USS Mississippi made five port calls at the base in October, and USS Texas remained there over seven days in December.

USS Cheyenne, a Los Angeles-class submarine (109 meters long), made the most number of port calls (six), staying for a total of 17 days.
